The primary advantages of the zipper are that 1) the closure keeps out dirt and moisture a whole lot better than drawcord tops, and 2) it allowed OR to do away with floppy end caps that are always getting tangled in the compression straps. Attached very solidly along one side, the lid can be kneeled on or used as a handle to stabilize the sack while stuffing.
